Crypto payments, alternative processors specifically serving the adult industry, and direct cash transactions are all options. None of them scale as easily as traditional credit card processing, but the major processors aren’t reliable partners for this content category anymore.

Cartoon Network Has Fewer Than 50,000 Daily Viewers

Cartoon Network has reportedly dropped below 50,000 daily viewers, and Warner Bros. is responding by offloading the channel’s projects to other streaming platforms. The new Scooby-Doo anime series is going to Tubi. Gumball and Adventure Time are going to Hulu. Batman content is heading to Amazon.

Xbox is now XBOX, with Microsoft apparently deciding that all-caps branding will move the console out of last place. The rumored next-generation hardware is also reportedly going to cost around $900 with $70-$80 games.

Combined with $70-$80 game pricing, that’s a console-plus-launch-titles entry point pushing $1,200 for a household that wants to play games. Last brief’s data showed gamers are already refusing to pay $70 for current-generation titles. The math on $900 hardware plus $80 games against that audience resistance is genuinely bad.

Writers who held the line during the strike are now finding the work isn’t coming back at the volumes the industry sustained before 2020.

Training AI replacements for a paycheck is the kind of compromise that previous generations of skilled workers also made when their industries collapsed. The labor history is the same pattern. Workers help automate themselves out of the job because the immediate paycheck matters more than the long-term strategy. The outcome is also the same. The industry restructures, the trained AI takes the work, the workers move on to whatever’s left.

Whether Hollywood emerges from this transition as a smaller industry with a different skill mix or as a hollowed-out shell of what it was is the open question. The construction-job exodus suggests the latter is at least plausible.

Playmates Lawyers Up Over TMNT

Playmates Toys has hired a law firm to defend the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles brand. The company has manufactured TMNT toys since the 1980s.

Whatever’s happening behind the scenes was significant enough to require outside counsel rather than internal handling. Toy licensing disputes don’t usually escalate to external law firms unless the parties have already burned through the normal channels.

The TMNT brand has been through several creative direction shifts over the past five years between movie adaptations, animated series, video games, and the toy line itself. Paramount owns the rights. Nickelodeon runs the animated side. Multiple licensees including Playmates have toy and merchandise deals layered on top. Any one of those relationships going sideways creates the kind of situation that ends up in front of attorneys.

Whether the dispute is about creative control, licensing terms, royalty structures, or something else entirely is still emerging. What’s clear is that one of the most recognizable IPs of the last 40 years is heading toward litigation, and the timing isn’t great for a brand already navigating multiple competing creative visions.

Disney’s Reputation Is at an All-Time Low

Disney’s reputation has never been lower per actual reputation tracking data. Josh D’Amaro said the company is in a Category of One at the Upfronts presentation, while Jimmy Kimmel openly laughed at the company that signs his paychecks.

The reputation data is the part worth focusing on. Disney has spent the last several years dealing with consecutive controversies, box office disappointments, theme park price-hike backlash, Disney+ programming missteps, the cruise line situation from previous briefs, and parks attendance softness. The cumulative effect is a brand that has lost the affectionate goodwill it spent 50 years building.

A Category of One framing from leadership while a flagship talent laughs at the executives in the same room is the kind of detail that captures the disconnect. Disney leadership is still selling the we’re untouchable story to advertisers. The actual audience and the actual employees aren’t buying it anymore.

Gamers Are Done Paying Full Price for New Games

Gamers are not paying full price for new games anymore per recent survey data. Gen X is the most skeptical demographic about new releases, but the resistance is showing up across age groups.

The timing is the story. Last week, Bank of America declared that GTA 6 must cost $80 because AAA gaming can’t sustain itself at current prices. This week, the actual gaming audience is saying they’re not paying $70 either, let alone $80.

The disconnect is what matters. Publishers and analysts are arguing pricing needs to go up. Players are voting with their wallets that pricing needs to come down or value needs to come up. Both can’t be right. Whichever side gives way first determines the next phase of AAA gaming economics.

Most likely outcome: more major releases underperform at full price, more publishers shift toward live-service and free-to-play models, and the $70-to-$80 segment becomes harder to maintain regardless of what Bank of America says it needs to cost. Gen X driving the resistance is also telling. That’s the audience with the most disposable income, the most accumulated gaming purchases, and the deepest understanding of what a game should cost based on 40 years of price history.

Modern D&D Is About to Suck Even More

Modern Dungeons and Dragons will suck even more per Hasbro CEO Chris Cox, who seemingly confirmed that something like Universes Beyond is coming to Dungeons and Dragons the same way it came to Magic: The Gathering.

For the uninitiated, Universes Beyond is the Wizards of the Coast practice of crossing the core game with licensed IP. Magic got Lord of the Rings cards. Magic got Final Fantasy cards. Magic got Spider-Man cards. The mechanic prints money because the licensed product reaches audiences the core game doesn’t.

The objection from the Magic playerbase has been that the practice dilutes the brand. Magic used to be a self-contained fantasy world with its own lore. Now it’s a vehicle for whatever IP Wizards licensed this quarter.

Now D&D gets the same treatment. Apparently the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are coming. Whatever else they license is coming. The 50-year-old fantasy roleplaying game that defined a genre is about to become a cross-promotional vehicle for unrelated brands.

This is the second D&D-related red flag from Wizards in two weeks. Last week was the Drops rental subscription. This week is Universes Beyond. The audience that loved D&D for what it was is watching the brand get dismantled in real time.

Kickstarter Banned Adult and NSFW Comics

Kickstarter just banned NSFW and adult content across the platform, including comics. The new rules are broad enough to surprise creators who thought their projects were fine.

The shift matters because Kickstarter has been one of the primary funding mechanisms for indie comics, manga reprints, and adult-oriented art books for over a decade. Independent creators built their businesses on the platform specifically because traditional publishing wouldn’t fund mature content. Now the funding pipeline is gone.

What’s being banned is broader than the platform’s official language suggests. Some creators are reporting that projects featuring artistic nudity or mature themes are being flagged. Others are reporting that previously-approved projects are being delisted retroactively.

The likely outcome is migration to platforms like BackerKit, Crowdfundr, or direct sales through creator websites. Kickstarter built itself on indie creator funding and is now telling a meaningful chunk of that audience to go elsewhere.

Doctor Who Is Getting a Reboot

Doctor Who is partially getting the rumored reboot after AMC confirmed it’s picking up the franchise. The full Sony involvement that was part of the rumor hasn’t been officially confirmed yet, but AMC’s announcement validates the larger reboot story.

The current Disney+ run of Doctor Who has been creatively divisive and commercially underwhelming. The decision to move the franchise to AMC suggests BBC Studios is trying to find a partner that can deliver the audience size Doctor Who used to have when it was on traditional broadcast.

Whether AMC plus Sony can pull off what Disney couldn’t is the question. Doctor Who fans have been through several creative direction changes over the past decade and audience patience for another reset is genuinely uncertain.

The Odyssey Race Swap Controversy

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is race swapping some characters per early casting reports. The casting choices got called out on X. Entertainment journalists then responded to the criticism with their own coverage characterizing the backlash as unwarranted.

The pattern is familiar at this point. Casting decisions on adaptations of classical works generate online discussion. Some of it is genuine debate about adaptation fidelity. Some is bad-faith. Entertainment press tends to characterize all of it as one thing rather than disaggregating which conversations are which.

How the film performs theatrically will probably matter more than the casting discourse. Nolan releases generate built-in audience interest regardless of controversy, but the lingering question is whether the audience that shows up for Nolan films is the same audience that wants a faithful Odyssey adaptation.

Worth Tracking

Sony patented PlayStation AI that watches every second of your gameplay to auto-clip the best moments. The patent was filed May 5. Whether the feature actually ships, when, and in what form is unclear, but the always-watching premise is worth knowing about for the eventual privacy conversation.

Here’s what actually happened on each, in case you missed it.

D&D Beyond Wants You Renting Dungeons and Dragons

Dungeons and Dragons may be moving to a rental model with a new D&D Beyond system called Drops. Pay the monthly subscription. Get access to perks. Stop paying. Lose the perks.

You don’t own anything. You’re renting access to a hobby that, for most of its 50-year history, came in physical books you kept on a shelf.

This is the same play every other industry has run. Software moved to SaaS. Music moved to streaming. Movies moved to subscriptions you can’t archive. Now Wizards wants the same model for tabletop, which is supposed to be the analog hobby that escaped all of this.

The D&D audience has been here before. The 2023 Open Game License fight was the same conversation. Wizards tried to lock down what had previously been open. The playerbase revolted hard enough to force a full reversal. Drops is the same instinct trying a different door.

Whether the audience reads past the benefits program framing to the you will rent your hobby premise is what determines whether this gets the same reaction.

Avatar Just Leaked. Bootleg Blu-rays Are on eBay.

Bootleg Blu-rays of the unreleased Avatar TLA movie are flooding eBay after the full Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender leaked online.

The film hasn’t released theatrically yet. Paramount has been investing in this project for years. The entire thing is being burned to physical discs and sold through eBay listings before the studio has had a single weekend at the box office.

Physical bootlegs are a different problem than torrent leaks. Someone obtained a high-quality master, mass-produced the discs, and built a distribution operation fast enough to flood listings within days of the leak. That points at a screener leak, a distribution-side breach, or a duplicate from the Blu-ray manufacturing pipeline. None of those are accidental.

eBay will pull the listings as fast as sellers post them. But that’s whack-a-mole on inventory that’s already in the wild.

Studio leak protection keeps getting worse. Multiple major releases have hit pirate sites and bootleg channels days or weeks before theatrical premieres in the past two years. Paramount just took a financial hit on a project they couldn’t afford to take a hit on.

Disney World Attendance Is Down While Revenue Is Up

Disney World and Disneyland attendance is down across both coasts. Revenue keeps climbing, which tells you exactly what’s happening. Fewer people are visiting. The ones who do are paying more.

Disney has been raising prices on tickets, lodging, dining, and Genie+ access for years. The per-guest spend is masking the attendance trend.

The bigger problem is the pile-up. Layoffs continue. Gas is hitting $6 a gallon in parts of the country, which makes the drive-to vacation math harder. The Disney Cruise Line is still working through last week’s investigation plus a separate norovirus outbreak that’s affecting bookings.

Any one of these would be manageable. All of them landing at once on a price-sensitive consumer is the kind of convergence that ends up in investor calls.

The Box Office Is Still Broken

Two new data points this week. Masters of the Universe is tracking around $25 million for opening weekend. That’s lower than Tron: Ares managed at $33 million. Both are big-budget event releases with established IP. Both are landing in territory that would have been disaster numbers a decade ago.

Meanwhile, Mortal Kombat 2 got beaten at the box office by The Devil Wears Prada 2. The fashion sequel held the number one spot in its second weekend. MK2 couldn’t overtake it.

That outcome would have seemed impossible going in. Mortal Kombat is a video game adaptation with built-in fan demand. The Devil Wears Prada 2 is a 19-year-late sequel. The audience chose the sequel.

The old assumption that genre tentpoles automatically outperform mid-budget adult dramas isn’t holding anymore.

Cody Rhodes Got a Nintendo Cease and Desist Over Zelda Boots

WWE star Cody Rhodes got hit with a Nintendo cease-and-desist over the Triforce design on his ring gear.

The current WWE champion put a Zelda reference on his boots. Nintendo‘s legal team objected. Nobody who has paid attention to Nintendo’s IP enforcement for the last 30 years is surprised.

Nintendo doesn’t make exceptions. Fan animations get takedowns. ROM sites get takedowns. Emulator projects get takedowns. Apparently wrestling attire gets takedowns too.

Rhodes will update the boots before his next televised match. The story is mostly a reminder that Nintendo’s legal team has no celebrity carve-outs.

Google Chrome Installs a 4GB AI Agent Without Asking

Google Chrome apparently installs a 4GB AI agent on user computers without explicit consent. The component is part of Google‘s push to embed Gemini-based AI features into Chrome by default. The install happens silently in the background.

4GB is not a minor utility. That’s a substantial software component being deployed to millions of machines without anyone agreeing to it.

Chrome already has a reputation for resource consumption. A silent 4GB AI agent makes that significantly worse, especially for anyone on lower-end hardware or limited storage.

The EU is going to have something to say about this. Consent-to-install rules across the bloc are stricter than in the US. Google has been on the wrong side of those rules before.

Worth Tracking

Hasbro and Mattel might finally merge into one giant toy monopoly after a major Mattel shareholder dropped an open letter demanding the Barbie maker pursue a combination with Hasbro. The antitrust review would be brutal and the deal is years away from any closing, but the shareholder pressure is real.

Nintendo Stock Down 34% on the Year After Switch 2 Price Hike

Nintendo stock crashed Monday after the company announced its Switch 2 price hike on Friday. Shares dropped 8.4% in Tokyo to 7,020 yen, the lowest level since August 2024. Year-to-date losses now exceed 34%, marking Nintendo’s worst annual stretch in roughly ten years per Bloomberg.

The Switch 2 price will rise from $449.99 to $499.99 in the US effective September 1. Japan goes from ¥49,980 to ¥59,980 starting May 25. Canada moves to $679.99. Europe to €499.99. The driver is unprecedented memory chip price increases caused by AI infrastructure demand crowding out consumer electronics manufacturers in the DRAM supply chain.

But the price hike alone isn’t what spooked investors. Nintendo also issued a bleak FY27 forecast. The company projects 16.5 million Switch 2 units for the current fiscal year, down from the 19.86 million sold since launch. Revenue guidance of 2.05 trillion yen came in 11.4% below the prior year and well short of analyst expectations of 2.46 trillion. Operating profit guidance of ¥370 billion landed about ¥110 billion beneath consensus.

President Shuntaro Furukawa acknowledged the challenges but pointed to software as the answer, citing Pokémon Pokopia‘s impact on hardware sales. “The fact that Pokémon Pokopia contributed to hardware sales reaffirmed for us that having software people genuinely want to play is a key factor in encouraging migration to Nintendo Switch 2,” Furukawa said.

The bigger problem is the 2026 software lineup. Nintendo doesn’t have a clear killer-app on the calendar before the holiday window. Star Fox in June is solid but isn’t a Breath of the Wild. Until Nintendo shows what’s coming next, the stock is going to keep struggling regardless of pricing decisions.

Slay the Spire 2 Got Review Bombed Over Anita Sarkeesian

Slay the Spire 2 got review bombed after Anita Sarkeesian appeared in the game’s credits. Thousands of gamers reportedly purchased the game specifically to negative-review it on Steam because of her involvement.

Sarkeesian remains one of the most polarizing figures in the gaming industry roughly a decade after the Gamergate era. Her appearance in any game’s credits continues to function as a flashpoint for the same segment of gamers who organized against her work in 2014-2015.

The interesting part of this story isn’t that the review bombing happened. It’s that buyers spent actual money to leave negative reviews. Steam requires a purchase before a review can be posted, which means every negative review represents a paid copy of the game. The review-bombers funded the developers in the process of trying to hurt them. Whether that’s a strategic miscalculation or a deliberate trade-off — pay $25 to lower the Steam score by an aggregate fraction — is the question.

The damage to Slay the Spire 2‘s Steam reception is real because Steam reviews drive discovery and conversion for indie titles. Whether the developers had any idea this would be the reaction when adding Sarkeesian to the credits is unclear.

The fight from a decade ago apparently isn’t over.

Cloudflare Lays Off 20% of Its Workforce

Cloudflare laid off 20% of its employees and blamed AI for the cuts. The official line is that AI productivity gains made the headcount unnecessary. The actual line is that the tech industry’s adult-daycare era is over.

The era of free food, unlimited PTO, and headcount-as-prestige is functionally over across most of the major tech employers. Google, Microsoft, Meta, Amazon, and Salesforce have all run multiple layoff rounds in the past 18 months. AI is the convenient explanation. The real driver is that the zero-interest-rate hiring binge of 2020-2022 created roles the post-ZIRP economy can’t support.

What makes the Cloudflare cuts notable is the percentage. 20% in a single round is aggressive even by current standards. The signal is that the company expects to operate at meaningfully smaller scale going forward, not just trim some excess.

For tech workers, the message is that the learn to code era is being followed by the learn to do something else era. The bull run is over.

Japanese Devs Will Strike You for Streaming Their Game

You’re not allowed to stream Steins;Gate Re:Boot per the developers, or you will get banned. Streamers who post gameplay are reportedly facing direct strikes from the developer rather than just standard DMCA action.

The position is unusual for the Japanese game development space. Most major studios have moved toward streaming-friendly content policies over the past several years because the marketing value of streamers showing the game outweighs the lost sales from people watching instead of playing.

Steins;Gate Re:Boot is taking the opposite position. The game is heavily narrative and the developer apparently considers playthroughs a meaningful spoiler risk that hurts paid sales. Whether that calculus actually holds up against the lost marketing reach is the open question.

The broader signal is that Japanese developer policies on streaming, AI, and fan engagement are diverging meaningfully from Western industry norms. This is one more data point in that direction.

Hollywood Union Accused of Violence and Intimidation

The WGAW union has been accused of choosing violence during its recent strike actions. According to leadership statements, the union explicitly framed certain tactics as confrontational rather than peaceful.

The second part is the controversial piece. Creators are responsible for their channel’s traffic patterns even if they didn’t authorize the botting. Anyone with a hater willing to artificially inflate their numbers could theoretically get penalized for the third-party action.

GTA 6 costing $80 has been the assumed outcome for the past year. The Bank of America commentary just makes the assumption official.

What’s more interesting is whether $80 is the new floor or just the GTA 6 ceiling. If other publishers follow the model, the AAA segment becomes meaningfully more expensive for the average gamer at the exact moment the broader consumer-tech market is also raising prices on everything else.

The deflationary curve that defined gaming for 30 years has been reversing for the past few years. $80 GTA 6 would make the reversal official.

Worth Tracking

A few more items worth knowing about. Bayonetta creator Hideki Kamiya told fans calling Bayonetta an LGBTQ icon to disappear in a viral X exchange, continuing his pattern of pushing back hard on Western fan reinterpretations of his characters.

Sony Just Lost $765 Million on Bungie

Sony got f**ked by Marathon, and Bungie just cost them $765 million in impairment charges over the past financial year.

That’s split across two separate write-downs. The first was a $204 million charge in Q2 after Destiny 2 underperformed. The second was a $565 million charge in Q4 after Marathon landed with a thud and sold just 1.2 million copies, with nearly 70% of those on Steam.

Sony paid $3.6 billion for Bungie in 2022. The $765 million write-down represents over 21% of the original acquisition value erased from the books in a single year. Sony Gaming listed it as the biggest negative factor impacting operating income for FY25.

And it might not be over. Industry analyst Jacob Navok pointed out that the current impairment seems too small relative to the actual valuation drop and predicted additional write-downs in the next quarter. His read is that two low-concurrent-user games plus an unannounced Destiny 3 aren’t worth the $2.8 billion that’s still on Sony’s books for Bungie.

Bungie was supposed to give Sony a live-service portfolio to compete with Microsoft. Instead it’s now Sony’s most expensive recent strategic mistake, and the bleeding may not be done.

GameStop CEO Got Banned From eBay After Trying to Buy It

In a plot twist nobody saw coming, Ryan Cohen got banned from eBay after offering to buy eBay last week. Reports indicate Cohen was selling GameStop merch on eBay, apparently to help cover the cost of acquiring eBay. Or something.

eBay’s response was to ban the account. Which is the kind of corporate clapback that doesn’t usually happen in proposed M&A scenarios.

The $55.5 billion acquisition offer is still technically on the table. eBay’s board still has to formally respond. But the optics on this just got significantly more complicated.

Building a Gaming PC in 2026 Is Borderline Insane

You’d have to be insane to build a gaming PC in 2026 given the current cost of RAM, hard drives, and GPUs. The DRAM spike that’s pressuring Nintendo‘s Switch 2 hardware margins is hitting consumer PC builders even harder.

Now motherboard sales are also reportedly slipping, which suggests the broader PC component market is contracting from both the supply side and the demand side simultaneously.

The era of building a competitive gaming rig for $800 to $1,200 is functionally over. Current builds are pushing $2,000 to $3,000 for what used to be mid-range performance. That’s the kind of price reset that pushes more gamers toward consoles regardless of how good the PC ecosystem is.

RDJ Doesn’t Think YouTubers Can Be Real Stars

Hollywood is in cope mode and Robert Downey Jr. is the latest to weigh in. He doesn’t think much of digital influencers, which apparently includes streamers, YouTubers, and podcasters when measured against traditional movie stardom.

The take is the kind of thing legacy Hollywood keeps saying as YouTube creators continue pulling subscriber counts and ad revenue that dwarf traditional media. MrBeast has more subscribers than the population of most countries. The math has been telling on the cope for years.

The legitimate question is whether the platforms produce stars in the way Hollywood does or whether the metrics just look different. Either way, RDJ isn’t moving the needle on the larger conversation.

Disney Cruise Line Caught in a Sensitive Sting

Disney Cruise Ships are reportedly involved in a serious investigation involving multiple individuals caught in a sting tied to crimes against children. Early reporting tried to frame it as something less serious than what it actually is.

The framing matters because Disney Cruise Line is a family-focused brand that markets specifically to parents traveling with kids. Coverage of this needs to be honest about what’s being investigated rather than minimized through corporate-friendly framing.

The investigation is ongoing. Specific details are still emerging. It’s a story worth watching closely as the legal and corporate response unfolds.

Reddit and Google Got Sued for AI Hallucinations

Trolls may finally face consequences after a Canadian musician sued Google over AI Overviews picking up false information that cost him a gig. The lies appear to have originated on Reddit, which means Reddit itself is now caught up in the lawsuit too.

The case is genuinely interesting because it tests whether Google bears liability for what its AI surfaces from third-party sources, and whether the third-party sources bear liability for hosting the false content in the first place. Both questions are unresolved in current law.

If the suit succeeds, the AI-search-meets-user-generated-content business model changes overnight. If it fails, the trolls keep trolling. Either way, this is the kind of case worth tracking.

Xbox Dropped Copilot AI Integration

Xbox is dropping Copilot from the console after months of pressure from gamers who didn’t want the AI assistant baked into their gaming experience. The retreat is a small win for the just let me play games contingent.

It’s also a meaningful signal about Microsoft‘s broader Xbox strategy. The company has been pushing AI integration across most of its product lines, but the gaming audience pushed back hard enough that Xbox is now backing off.

Whether this represents real listening or just a tactical retreat ahead of the next AI integration attempt is the question. Microsoft hasn’t given up on AI in gaming. They’re just retiming the rollout.

Worth Tracking

A few more items worth knowing about. Nintendo investors are reportedly pushing to raise the Switch 2 price because each unit is selling at a $50 hardware loss. Friday’s earnings call will be the moment of truth on whether Nintendo holds the line at $449.99.

Disney spent May the 4th pretending the sequel trilogy didn’t happen. Sony decided UK gamers should let a camera scan their face to verify they’re old enough to play The Last of Us. And GameStop, with a market cap of about $12 billion, announced an unsolicited $55.5 billion offer to acquire eBay, which is roughly four times its size. Prediction markets give the deal a 15-26% chance of closing.

Here’s what actually happened on each, in case you missed it.

Disney’s Star Wars Is Having a Very Bad Week

The Disney/Star Wars trouble accumulated all week. On May 1, The Mandalorian and Grogu started tracking lower than Solo, with even mainstream media bracing for another Star Wars box office disappointment three weeks before opening. The film was supposed to be the franchise’s relaunch moment.

By May 4, Disney was actively distancing itself from the Star Wars sequels for May the 4th, with theme parks leaning hard into Original Trilogy material after the Kathleen Kennedy exodus. Even Star Wars Day social media leaned classic and avoided the sequel-era content the company spent fourteen years promoting.

A day later, Disney quietly conceded that Star Wars films are basically made-for-TV movies now, with friendly-media screenings for The Mandalorian and Grogu and the franchise pivoting toward production economics that don’t require theatrical event status. Whether anyone wants to admit it or not.

Three different layers of the company saying the same thing in five days. The sequel trilogy was the part audiences didn’t want. The course correction is happening in real time.

Sony Wants UK Gamers to Scan Their Faces for Age Verification

Starting June 1, UK PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 owners will need to verify their age either with a government-issued driver’s license or with a facial ID scan to access age-restricted content. The rule is downstream of the UK Online Safety Act, which has been driving similar changes across other platforms.

Gamers are predictably furious. The objection isn’t really about age verification in principle. It’s about whether Sony, a company with a documented history of large-scale data breaches, should be the entity holding biometric scans of millions of users.

The broader concern is that this is the start of something rather than the end of it. The UK is the first market. The same regulatory pressure exists in the EU and is gathering in several US states.

GameStop’s $56 Billion eBay Bid Is Either Brilliant or Insane

GameStop is dead serious about buying eBay, with a market cap of around $12 billion and a $55.5 billion offer at $125 per share on the table. The financing is half cash, half stock, with a $20 billion debt commitment from TD Bank backing the cash portion and GameStop’s own $9.4 billion cash pile making up part of the rest. CEO Ryan Cohen says he wants to combine GameStop’s roughly 1,600 brick-and-mortar locations with eBay’s online marketplace to create what he calls a legit competitor to Amazon.

eBay’s board acknowledged receipt and said it would review. eBay’s stock climbed about 5% on the news. GameStop’s stock dropped 10%. Prediction markets aren’t optimistic. Kalshi traders give the deal a 26% chance of closing in 2026, and Polymarket gives it 15%.

If this somehow goes through, Cohen is positioned to become CEO of the combined company. If it doesn’t, this is the latest chapter in GameStop’s ongoing meme-stock theater. Either outcome is going to be interesting to watch.

Nintendo Could’ve Gone to Jail If Amazon Had Its Way

Nintendo could’ve gone to jail over Amazon‘s alleged request for coordinated price fixing on Nintendo products, which is the kind of arrangement that ends business relationships and starts antitrust investigations. The Sherman Act is approximately one hundred and thirty years old at this point and remains pretty clear on this specific behavior being illegal.

Nintendo refused. The relationship between Nintendo and Amazon has been strained ever since. The implications for Switch availability on Amazon going forward are unclear.

The bigger story is Amazon’s apparent willingness to make the request at all, which suggests this isn’t a one-off and other publishers may have received similar approaches.

Sony Settling a Class Action Over PS5 Digital Storefront

Sony has to give gamers their money back for several PS5 games purchased between 2019 and 2023. The Last of Us is on the list. Several other titles are too, some of them surprising.

Affected purchasers will reportedly be notified directly. The refund process is straightforward but worth knowing about because anyone who bought from PlayStation Network during that window may have a small refund coming whether they noticed or not.

Wizards of the Coast Caught Plagiarizing Magic Card Art Again

Magic players caught Wizards of the Coast plagiarizing card art from a previous Lord of the Rings-themed card without crediting the original artist. The artist who reused the elements is one of WOTC’s longer-running contributors, which complicates the situation.

Players are predictably angry. The broader concern is the company’s relationship with its artist community, which has been strained for the last several years over various issues including AI-generated card art that WOTC initially denied and later acknowledged.

Reddit’s CEO Picked a Fight With Google

In an instant-classic move, the Reddit CEO went full Reddit Mod on Google and announced that Google needs Reddit more than Reddit needs Google. The reason is the licensing deal Reddit signed letting Google train AI on Reddit content, and Reddit’s CEO apparently decided the leverage is theirs.

Whether Google sees it the same way is the open question. Reddit’s stock movement on the comments will tell whether investors think the leverage claim is real or theatrical.

Worth Tracking

A few more items worth knowing about. BlueSky and Twitter could merge soon, which would be the social media plot twist of the year if it actually happens. The new Pope may make disclosures about UFOs and aliens, which is the kind of sentence that requires a wait-and-see. Assassin’s Creed Shadows is being outsold on Steam this week by older Assassin’s Creed titles. Pizza Hut is closing 250 underperforming US locations in early 2026 and may be sold off entirely.

Nearly two decades before the live-action One Piece became a monster hit on Netflix, The Wachowskis’ Speed Racer raced into theaters.

And it immediately crashed and burned.

Having just rewatched the theatrical rerelease in theaters, it’s easy to see why. It was way ahead of its time.

I saw the rerelease at Pittsburgh Mills, a ghost town of a mall with an incredible theater, and I took my two older kids with me. They weren’t prepared for what they were about to see.

I told them up front that visually there’s nothing like it on the planet, and I stand by that.

The movie looks fantastic. Not sure if what we saw was the new 4K remaster or just a really clean print, but it held up against anything new in theaters and then some.

It really needs to be seen on a big screen to be appreciated. There’s a density of visual information happening in every frame that home video flattens out, even on a good TV.

The Wachowskis knew what they were doing. Unfortunately, nobody else did.

Speed Racer Was a Box Office Disaster That Was Actually Doing Something New

The numbers in 2008 were brutal.

Speed Racer opened May 9 to $18.56 million across 3,606 theaters, finishing third behind Iron Man and What Happens in Vegas. Yes, that’s the Cameron Diaz / Ashton Kutcher Vegas one, and yes, it beat Speed Racer.

The film closed its domestic run at $43.9 million, picked up another $50 million internationally, and ended at roughly $93.9 million worldwide on a $120 million production budget. Per Box Office Mojo, that’s a flop by any reasonable accounting.

The reviews matched the box office. Critics found the visual intensity exhausting and the story thin underneath all the spectacle.

Warner Bros. spent the press tour talking up merchandise potential, which is the kind of thing studios do when they need to change the subject.

But what the Wachowskis were actually doing was something nobody had really attempted at that scale.

Filmed June through August of 2007 at Babelsberg Studios near Berlin and Potsdam, Speed Racer was the directors’ first time using HD digital cameras, and the entire production took place on greenscreen stages with digital environments and cars added later.

The visual approach pulled from pop art, cubism, and the flat multi-layered look of cel animation. Everything in frame stayed in sharp focus, foreground to background, the way anime treats every layer with equal visual weight.

Lana Wachowski later described the goal as wanting to assault every modern aesthetic of how movies were supposed to look. The term they used for the style was “poptimistic photo-anime.”

The Royalton auto factory sequence in particular feels like the Wachowskis were drinking from the same visual well Robert Rodriguez had been mining since the Spy Kids movies.

Saturated colors, deep-focus everything-in-the-frame composition, sets that exist as physical manifestations of cartoon imagination. Floop’s Castle for adults.

Rodriguez had been making the case for cartoon-logic-in-live-action since 2001, and the Wachowskis joined him in 2008 with the same instinct applied to general audiences instead of just kids.

The audience wasn’t ready.

The audience had been trained for over a decade by Hollywood that “live-action adaptation” meant grounding the source material in something resembling our world. Speed Racer told the audience in the opening minutes that this was a cartoon world rendered with real cameras, and a critical mass of viewers couldn’t make the contract.

Iron Man Beat Speed Racer the Same Weekend, and the MCU Spent a Decade Doing the Slow Version of the Same Problem

Here’s the part that’s funny in retrospect.

The Iron Man / Speed Racer head-to-head opening weekend in May 2008 was actually two opposite philosophies arguing in the same theaters on the same day.

Iron Man said we’ll grow into this slowly, we’ll start grounded and earn the cosmic stuff over years. Speed Racer said the cosmic stuff is the contract, we’re starting there.

Iron Man won the box office. Speed Racer won the argument over the next eighteen years.

The MCU’s first phase is essentially the slow-rollout version of the same problem Speed Racer tackled head-on.

Iron Man (2008) is mostly grounded. Rich tech guy, flying suit, no other heroes, the world looks like our world. The Incredible Hulk follows the same pattern.

Iron Man 2 introduces some cosmic hints. Thor finally goes cosmic but immediately exiles its protagonist to a small town in New Mexico for most of the runtime so the audience doesn’t get culture shock.

Captain America: The First Avenger hides the cosmic in WWII period dressing.

Then Guardians of the Galaxy in 2014. And it doesn’t even feel like the same universe as Iron Man 1 and 2. Talking raccoon, sentient tree, cosmic empire.

James Gunn used Star-Lord’s Walkman, the Awesome Mix soundtrack, and earth-coded humor to negotiate the cartoon-logic contract within the first ten minutes, because the visuals alone couldn’t yet carry it.

It worked because Marvel had earned six years of audience trust by then.

If Guardians had been Marvel’s first movie in 2008, it would have failed exactly the way Speed Racer failed.

That’s the part Hollywood understood and didn’t understand at the same time.

Marvel was right that 2008 audiences couldn’t have accepted Guardians on day one. The reason audiences couldn’t have accepted it is that Hollywood’s prior adaptation philosophy had trained them to expect realism in adaptations.

The Wachowskis tried to break that training in one movie. They couldn’t, because the training was too deep.

Marvel just had a decade of patience and infinite Disney money to slowly retrain the audience instead.

Hollywood spent ten years and a few billion dollars getting audiences to where Speed Racer wanted them on day one.

That’s not a strategic insight. That’s a luxury.

Everyone Who Tried the Marvel Approach Without Marvel Money Lost

Here’s what happened to everyone who tried the gradual approach to adapting cartoon source material without a ten-year runway and Disney’s checkbook.

Dragonball Evolution in 2009. Death Note in 2017. Cowboy Bebop in 2021.

Each one tried to “fix” anime by grounding it for a live-action audience. Each one stripped away the visual grammar that made the source material work in the first place. Each one failed.

The pattern is repeatable to the point of being a joke.

Take a property where the visual style is half the appeal. Decide the visual style is a problem to solve. Hire a production team to make it look like a normal show set in a normal world.

Watch the audience that loved the original walk away in the first episode because the thing they loved isn’t there. Watch the audience that didn’t know the original walk away because there’s nothing pulling them in.

Get cancelled.

Cowboy Bebop especially deserves to be remembered as the cautionary tale.

Netflix sank real money into it, the cast was largely game, the production design was at least trying. But the show kept apologizing for being Cowboy Bebop.

The strangeness was sanded off. The cartoon physics that made the anime work were dialed back. The audience that came in already loving the source material spent every episode noticing what was missing.

Cancelled after one season.

The studios had ten years of evidence that grounding cartoon source material was killing it, and they kept doing it anyway. Because the prevailing wisdom said live-action audiences need realism.

The Brain Doesn’t Have a Problem With Talking Reindeer. The Brain Has a Problem With Talking Reindeer in a World That Said It Was Realistic

Here’s the thing nobody at Hollywood seemed to understand for over a decade.

Audiences don’t reject cartoon stuff in live-action because it’s cartoon stuff. They reject it because the visual world told them it was a realistic story, and then asked them to accept impossible things.

The brain doesn’t have a problem with talking reindeer. The brain has a problem with talking reindeer in a world that just spent forty minutes establishing itself as not having talking reindeer.

This is uncanny valley extended past faces, into physics, scale, color, and event logic.

When something looks almost real but the rules don’t match real, the gap between what we see and what reality looks like becomes the focus. Realistic-looking Chopper makes us notice the parts that are wrong about realistic-looking Chopper.

Plush-toy Chopper bypasses the comparison entirely because we’re not measuring it against anything in our world.

What cartoons figured out a hundred years ago is that you set the rules early and the audience accepts them.

Within thirty seconds of a Looney Tunes short, Wile E. Coyote falls off a cliff and bounces. We don’t think about it.

The visual grammar declared this is a world where physics is negotiable and we accepted the contract. Live-action anime adaptations that ground the visuals are also asking us to accept impossible physics, but they’re asking in a world that visually claims to be ours.

Cognitive dissonance. Audience checks out.

The Wachowskis understood the contract had to be set in the first frame. So did Rodriguez. So did James Cameron when he got around to it.

Battle Angel Alita Was Rodriguez Coming Back to What He Already Knew

Battle Angel Alita in 2019 is the moment everything turns.

Robert Rodriguez directing, James Cameron producing and co-writing. The fight that supposedly happened in production was over Alita’s huge anime eyes, which Rodriguez and Cameron insisted on keeping despite production pressure to make them more “realistic.”

That fight is the entire thesis of this article in one design decision. The eyes told the audience in the first frame that this is a cartoon-coded world even though we’re using real cameras and real environments.

Without the eyes, Alita would have been Ghost in the Shell (2017). Beautifully shot, realistic-looking, and unable to support its own anime concepts because the visual contract said realism.

With the eyes, the audience accepted the rest of the cartoon physics and emotional beats because the contract was clear in the first ten seconds.

Alita made $404 million worldwide on a $170 million budget, which is technically still a flop on the studio math, but it was a respectable flop and critically the first major Hollywood live-action anime in a decade that audiences actually responded to.

The eyes did the work.

What’s worth pointing out is that Rodriguez had been running this exact playbook since Spy Kids in 2001.

The contract-setting move, the cartoon logic in real cameras, the trust-the-audience instinct. He was the through-line the whole time.

Cameron’s involvement gave Alita the production scale and budget to land the argument at adult-audience scale, but Rodriguez was the one who knew the visual contract had to be set up front because he’d been doing it for two decades.

Speed Racer was the Wachowskis joining him for one swing. Alita was him coming back to the well with reinforcements.

One Piece Is Doing the Same Thing Speed Racer Did, Just With Real Ships Instead of Greenscreen

Netflix’s live-action One Piece, premiering Season 1 on August 31, 2023, is the proof that the Wachowski-Rodriguez instinct was correct all along.

The production approach is interesting because it’s the opposite of Speed Racer methodologically. Where Speed Racer went all-in on greenscreen and digital environments, One Piece went all-in on practical sets.

Cape Town production. The Going Merry built as a real ship, scavenged from real ship parts. The Baratie restaurant as a physical location. Costume and hair design pulled directly from Eiichiro Oda’s Color Walk art books as the reference bible.

But the underlying instinct is identical. Don’t dial back the source material. Build a production approach that supports its strangeness instead.

The key moment is Eiichiro Oda’s intervention on Tony Tony Chopper’s design.

Oda is executive producer on the show, and per Netflix’s own Tudum coverage, when the design team showed him test materials for a hyper-realistic reindeer-hybrid Chopper, he pushed back and demanded the cute plush-toy version.

That’s the contract-setting decision in real time.

The team’s first instinct was to ground Chopper in realistic anatomy, the failure mode that killed Cowboy Bebop. Oda overrode it because he understood, the same way the Wachowskis understood, that the visual contract has to be set up front or the whole thing falls apart.

Co-showrunner Matt Owens called Oda’s manga the team’s “north star.” Production designer Richard Bridgland talked about building practical sets so the world would feel like “a real but parallel universe” instead of floating in digital space.

The show kept Luffy’s rubbery cartoon stretching by focusing the VFX on weight, wrinkles, and motion that honored the manga rather than making him look like plastic.

The numbers are vindication-level. Season 2, One Piece: Into the Grand Line, dropped March 10, 2026 and pulled 16.8 million views in its first four days, ranking number one worldwide for the week per Variety’s reporting.

Season 3 is already in production. Speed Racer made $93 million globally and got crucified. One Piece embraces the same visual grammar and dominates Netflix worldwide.

The Wachowskis Were Right. Hollywood Just Took Eighteen Years to Catch Up

By the time One Piece dropped a talking reindeer in episode eight of Season 1, nobody blinked.

Because we’d already watched a guy stretch his arms across the screen and a clown reattach his own head.

The contract was set in the first frames of the first episode, and once you accept the contract, a talking deer is just another Tuesday.

That’s what Speed Racer was trying to do in 2008 in one movie. The Wachowskis knew what they were doing. Hollywood didn’t.

It took Robert Rodriguez coming back to the visual logic he’d been using since Spy Kids, James Cameron co-signing it with Alita, and Eiichiro Oda personally overriding bad design decisions on a Netflix show before the rest of the industry figured out what was right there in 2008.

Speed Racer is in theaters for a limited time now, and on 4K Blu-ray May 19. Go see it on the biggest screen you can find.

The Wachowskis will get the last laugh either way.
